Click to expand.Personally I would've went with the 305 since it has pretty good GPH and the reviews are all positive and I'm on a budget.I have a 75 G planted and its amazon/south-east asia themed. Most of my fish come from the slow moving waters of the amazon. I don't want to stress my fish by adding tons of current.260 GPH on the 305 on my opinion seems like a lot and would make my tank cleaner and better than ever, the 305 is rated for up to 70 gallons so 5 more gallons wouldn't make a huge difference to me.for the 405 it is rated up to 100 gallons and has 340 GPH and could be disastrous.But I'd like to see a good quality demonstration on the fluval 405 to see if it would be too much for a 75. I'm not saying that they aren't good filters, but of the 3 brands I use, they are at the bottom. I very much like the Sunsuns (white filter) and rena XP canisters much better. If you are on a budget I suggest you look at the sunsuns.In a larger tank, there is not as much concern about the current. There are always places that have less current that they can enjoy, rest in, or whatever.
In a small tank, that is not the case. I agree that the 305 is just not enough for a 75 gallon tank. They won't be stressed by a stronger current.I understand how you would think the filter is capable of doing x, y and z, because thats what the box says. But in reality, the capacity of the filter is grossly over rated.
I run a 305 on my 30 gallon tank.a 405 would in NO WAY be disastrous for your tank. I run a 405 on my 45. IMO even a 405 isn't enough for a 75.Here is the 45 with the 405.
